President’s Note: October 2022

President’s Update: October 2022

Fall Greetings,

I’m Beth Cosentino, a Maplewood resident with two children in the school district and this year’s President for the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee: SEPAC SOMA. In the last few years, I’ve held various SEPAC roles, including Special Education Liaison, SEPAC Communications Officer and Administrator and SEPAC VP of Policy Initiatives. This year, I’m excited to serve as President and am fortunate to be working alongside a knowledgeable and passionate group of parents who make up the executive board.

One of our goals this year is to connect with more people throughout the community. To that end, we provided a presentation at the September Board of Education meeting. In that presentation you’ll not only learn about what a SEPAC is, but what SEPAC SOMA’s mission and other goals are.

Our motivation for a greater connection is two-fold: we want to know what’s happening with parents and students so we can make sure systemic issues are being addressed by the district and we want to provide support and resources to parents so they can better help their children. We believe working in a collaborative manner with all of our partners and parents is for the betterment of every student. And, as parents of children with disabilities in the district, we have all experienced our share of frustrations, challenges and, thankfully, successes, too. Please join us for our meetings, reach out if you have questions and know that you are not alone in this journey with your child.

In support and partnership,
Beth
